Do you want to learn how to find the constellations or the North Star? Do you want to take a long look at another planet and its moons? What about checking out the moon’s surface or seeing a double star? Join SCPR and the Shenandoah Astronomical Society for several stargazing evenings. Bring your binoculars or your own telescope, and dress for the nighttime temperatures. The hosts will provide telescopes and instruction. This is a weather- permitting event; if it’s cloudy
or raining, the event will be canceled until the next month. There is no pre-registration needed, but please be sure to check the cancellation line at 459-6777, Option 0, before heading to the park. This is a FREE activity! For all ages.

Pottery in the Park

Edinburg Town Park
Would you like to transform a lump of clay into a glazed pottery vessel? Art lovers will explore the creative medium of pottery by designing, hand-building, and glazing their own pottery pieces. With hands-on participation at every step of the process, students will even get to participate in an art critique and art show, entitled "Art in the Park", on Friday, August 9, to which family and friends are invited. Gain confidence, a sense of individual worth for self and others, and have fun making pottery. The fee covers all supplies and instruction time. In Session 1, one parent may accompany his/her child for a great parent-child activity! NO additional charge for the parent. PLEASE NOTE: Deadline to register is July 5.

Kayak the Shenandoah

Trip location will be determined closer to the date and will be based on water levels at that time.
Come paddle down the river and learn all about the Shenandoah River while you do it! SCPR, Friends of the North Fork, and Outdoor Adventures have teamed together to offer this great half day kayaking trip. A height and weight measurement will be needed for each participant prior to the trip, so we can bring the right size gear for everyone. Participants will be provided boats, paddles, life jackets, dry bags (to take personal items down the river in), first aid kit, and bathroom kit. Please wear comfortable, quick-drying clothing or bathing suit appropriate for the expected weather and comfortable shoes that you do not mind getting wet and muddy in the river. No open toed shoes, sandals, crocs, or flip-flops. Trip location will be determined closer to the date and will be based on water levels at that time. PLEASE NOTE: Deadline to register is September 13.

Full Moon Walk at Blandy

Meet in Blandy Experimental Farm library
See the Arboretum under the full moon. Wear comfortable shoes, bring a flashlight, and join us as we explore the natural world at dusk and after dark. For those 14 and older; no dogs please. Space is Limited

Cost is $8 for members of the Foundation of the State Arboretum, $10 for nonmembers. This program is part of Blandy’s public program series, which brings programs on a variety of topics to the Arboretum.
