Melissa Mullinax is pretty busy, between being yearbook editor, captain of the basketball team, and piling on plenty of AP and Honors courses, it's a surprise she even had time to sit down for this interview. But when she did we found that aside from all the work, is a young lady wise beyond her years.
"I've never viewed anything I've played as being about me or what my stats were or what I was accomplishing personally because I've always played team sports" said the Warriors senior forward. "I've always wanted everyone to feel like they were a part of the team.
This past season Sherando had a young team. With just 2 seniors on the roster and 7 players in the 9th or 10th grades, leadership was at a premium. So what did Melissa do, well, she stepped up.
"I knew I was only going to have a couple seniors and Melissa immediately took over the role of team leader in a lot of ways." noted her coach Tim Davis. "She didn't do it verbally but through her actions. She was a great help to me."
"You just have to lead by example and being enthusiastic. There are days you'd rather be other places but you have to be confident in what you do and I feel like if I'm confident then my team will feel confident in their abilities."
Congratulations to Melissa Mullinax of Sherando High School for being named TV3 Winchester's Student Athlete of the Week.
