"It's pretty weird for anybody to get my name right on the first try. It's usually Chrissy or sometimes Kirstin or something like that. But it's pretty understandable, it's not a common name" Says Campbell.
Not a common name, but Kirsti Campbell is not your usual high school athlete. A senior midfielder on the Handley Women's soccer team, Kirtsi excels in the class room and on the pitch.
"I don't know how Kirtsi handles everything in her life. It's not just academics and soccer, there are other things. I didn't know everything that she was involved in until I read her resume, that she gave to me for recommending her for a scholarship." Says Handley Women's Head Soccer Coach, Luke Mason.
That scholarship will be taking her to UVA next year, where she will likely major in something to do with science or medical research. She thanks her dad, who is a chemist, for the interest in both science and soccer.
"My dad played soccer pretty much his whole life. He and his brothers made up the midfield for Islands team. So that's how I started playing. My dad pushed me into it, and my brother wasn't into it, so I was the last chance I guess." Says Campbell.
With her heavy work load, Kirsti says soccer can be extremely relieving at times.
"I guess with school it's so structured and everything. But with soccer, you have a little bit of room to be creative, particularly in the midfield. It's just a stress release for the day." Says Campbell.
"How she competes in practice isn't any different to how she competes in a game. But everyone respects that, because they know that's Kirsti. Everyone knows what to expect when Kirsti steps on the field." Says Coach Mason.
A similar statement was once uttered about the great Michael Jordan. While Kirsti isn't going pro in her sport, there is no doubt she is going to make a name for herself in the future.
Congratulations Kirsti Campbell of Handley High School, TV 3 Winchesters Student Athlete of The Week.
