Spencer Burkholder is the leader of the pack.
"A lot of what Spencer brings is on the field stuff, such as his voice on the field. He is almost like a third coach on the field." Says Cosmo Balio, Handley High School Head Soccer Coach.
"I try and run a pretty hard practice because sometimes we come here and you're done with Monday classes and no one really wants to take it seriously." Says Burkholder.
It is leadership like that which has helped Spencer earn a 4.0 GPA and the privilege of being captain of this years Handley soccer squad. But that balancing act of academics and athletics isn't easy.
"I try not to think about soccer during the day. I sit in my classes and I try and focus. I enjoy a lot of my classes. For instance I really enjoy calculus, but for other classes, like English, where I don't really enjoy them that much, I try to bite the bullet and get the grade, then just get on the soccer field and let out some energy." Says Burkholdur.
Spencer also releases some tension by doing Pilate's and quoting funny movies.
"We like to say line from the Sand Lot, like, you're killing me smalls. Like if a bad touch happens, you just say, you're killing me smalls, and everybody forgets the bad touch ever happened." Says Burkholder.
"Definitely our comical relief on our team. He's always keeping the coaches half on their toes with his quick wit and stuff like that." Says Coach Balio
When he is not playing soccer or making people laugh, Spencer has been applying to colleges. He has already been accepted to Virgina Tech and Penn State, where he hopes to major in International Business.
"Je prefere manger a la cantina, which means I prefer eating in the cafeteria. It's kinda a comedy about how bad cafeteria food is." Says Burkholder
Spencer may have to learn a little more french, but so far he has succeeded in achieving his goals.
Congratulations Spencer Berkholder, of Handley High School, TV 3 Student Athlete of The Week.
