Handley athletics have enjoyed plenty of success over the past few years, and the Judges can attribute a lot of that to the balance displayed by their student athletes. Athletes like Robert Galloway, who in the past week and a half has made the transition from football to basketball.

"You have to balance both sides of it. You have to work hard at practice everyday and then go home and when you want to relax, you have to sit down and do some homework or study. I think you just have to take it as it comes," said Galloway.

Galloway, who played wide receiver and linebacker for the Judges this fall is entering his first year of varsity basketball at Handley. Though it might be a lot to ask a new player to step in and contribute, Judges Coach Tom Dixon feels Robert is up to the task.

"Robert is a good athlete and I think that it's going to take him a little bit longer this year simply because he's had a tough football season. I think once he gets comfortable with what we do and how we play, I think he's going to be fine," said Dixon.

Often we come across the misconception that being a good athlete can take away from being a good student. But for Galloway, who carries a 3.6 grade point average, the relationship between school and sports in mutually beneficial.

"Not only do I get to go to school everyday and see my friends, I get to play sports that I like. I think it's taught me how to handle my priorities and work well. I think it's helped me to become a better student," said Galloway.

Robert's unassuming demeanor fits his roles on both the football field and the basketball court. His coaches see it as part of a very simple formula. Good kids=good players.

"He's a hard worker, he works hard in the classroom, he works hard in his community, and he also works hard in his athletic endeavors. Fortunately he's here at Handley playing," said Dixon.

Congratulations to Robert Galloway, TV3 Winchester's Student Athlete of the Week.
