The success enjoyed by the Clarke County athletic programs is no secret, but how does the small Berryville school routinely compete on the state level? A big part of the Eagles success has to do with kids like our Student Athlete of the Week, senior Brecklyn Bodkin.

"We've been fortunate in that a kid like Brecklyn who works hard all the time in the classroom, works hard all the time on the field of play, they just raise the bar so high for everything, they have such a standard of excellence, that it keeps everyone in all the programs striving for that," said Clarke County girl's basketball coach Tim Lawrence.

Bodkin carries a 4.91 GPA that's made all the more impressive when you consider Brecklyn plays volleyball in the fall, basketball in the winter and soccer in the spring. This Eagle never stops and neither does her juggling act.

"I enjoy playing sports, that's not something I'm willing to give up for my school work for, but I'm still very studious and a perfectionist when it comes down to getting everything done," said Bodkin.

Bodkin plans on studying education in college and ranks UVA and JMU as two of her top choices. Bodkin wants to be a teacher and despite her lofty GPA she doesn't buy into the argument that she could do anything more important than educate youngsters.

"It's just something I've always wanted to do. I know alot of people who say you're so smart, why be a teacher when you can do so many other things, but it's something I have a passion for, and I want to do something I enjoy," said Bodkin.

A key role player for the Eagles hoops squad, Bodkin is a coaches favorite, leading in the locker room, in the classroom and even in practice where sometimes she steps up and does some coaching herself.

"When she sees someone that needs to make an adjustment here or there, rather than the coaches having to step in and do it all the time, since she's so well schooled and such a heady player, she'll go over and take care of that responsibility for us," said Lawrence.
