In addition to juggling her 3 sport schedule, SVCA's Kayla Powell has to balance two academic slates. Besides her workload at SVCA, she also takes courses at Lord Fairfax Community College, which means keeping her priorities straight is an absolute must.

"I know that your school is what's going to carry you through college and you're not going to do sports for the rest of your life, but what you do in high school will affect you for the rest of your life," said Powell.

While a busy schedule might bother most, Powell seems to be fine with running from one thing to another, and in the end she says it's all worth it for the good times and friends she's made through both sports and school.

"You make alot of friendships and our teams here, because we do have small teams, we are like family and we've become very close and we know each other very well , so you have great friendships and just playing the game is also enjoyment to me," said Powell.

On the court Kayla is an intergral part of what SVCA is trying to accomplish. The Patriots lone big time post player, Powell's coach is relying on her to do big things this season.

"We've developed our offense to revolve around her," said SVCA Head Coach Ron Combs. "We've got to get the ball inside, she's our biggest player, the strongest one we have inside. We're going to work hard on moving the ball around and get the ball to her so she can finish it."

At a school like Shenandoah Valley Christian Academy, with an enrollment of only 138, it's easy to stand out for either the right or the wrong reasons, but Powell sets the bar in a positive way so everyone has an example to follow.

"You don't realize it and half the time you don't even think about it, but then there's these random moments when someone says hey I saw you do that or I like like what you did over there. That makes you realize that kids really are looking up to so what you do on the court and in school really effects everyone around you," said Powell.

Congratulations to Kayla Powell of Shenandoah Valley Christian Academy, TV3 Winchester's Student Athlete of the Week.
