The record-setting heat just keeps coming in Virginia.

The National Weather Service says the temperature in Richmond was expected to break 100 again Thursday. The city already has seen a record 10 days of triple-digit temperatures this summer, topping the previous high of nine set in 1954.

Last month was the hottest July on record and the second-hottest month ever, trailing only August 1900.

Lyle Alexander, a weather service meteorologist in Wakefield, says the heat comes from high pressure systems that are typical for this time of year. He says it's just happenstance that some years see more of that pattern than others.

After this new blast of heat, temperatures are expected to cool just a bit before perhaps returning to near 100 next week.
