Karen Farnsworth joined TV3 Winchester as a reporter in October, 2007. Karen grew up on a college campus in Storrs, Connecticut. After graduating from the University of Connecticut, with a BS in Education, she served in the United States Peace Corps for two years in Costa Rica, Central America. She taught special education for several years until she became the director of the SAFE KIDS Coalition, at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford. After 5-years with CCMC, Karen moved to DC to run a nationwide traffic safety program for SAFE KIDS Worldwide, a program of Children’s National Medical Center. One of her major responsibilities with SAFE KIDS was to serve as the media spokesperson on issues related to children’s health and safety. In March of 2002, Karen and her husband Clay bought a 216 year-old farmhouse in Frederick County, VA. After moving to the area full time in 2004, she taught once again, at Apple Pie Ridge Elementary School. A bumper sticker on the back of a vehicle Karen saw in June of 2006 that simply stated “follow your bliss” inspired Karen to enroll in the Communication program at George Mason University to pursue a life-long desire to be in broadcast journalism. After finishing an internship with TV3 Winchester in May 2007, Karen signed on to work full time with TV3, covering issues related to health, which is her passion.
Karen and her husband Clay are members of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Karen also serves as a member of the Winchester Medical Center Auxiliary. Clay is a golf pro at Virginia National Golf Club, in Bluemont, VA.
