CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Fewer than 16,000 West Virginia homes and businesses remain without power after a series of violent summer storms that began June 29.

Appalachian Power said Wednesday morning it has about 8,800 customers awaiting service, while Mon Power has about 6,900 customers it still must restore.

At the height of the outages, some 680,000 people were without power, many for more than a week.

Other recovery efforts are continuing, including the distribution of 100,000 bottles of water by the disaster relief group AmeriCares. It's also donated 500 doses of tetanus vaccines and six cases of insulin to West Virginia Health Right in Charleston.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, meanwhile, says it's sent 297 water trucks, 750,000 meals and 110 industrial-size generators to West Virginia. It's also ordered 1,500 oxygen canisters.
