Two Million-Dollar Lottery Winners in the Valley

Not one lottery winner, but two came from right here in the Valley.

Josh Mayes won $1 million from buying a lottery ticket in Broadway and Sara Kesterson won $1 million from a ticket she bought in Staunton. Both of them are regular customers at the stores from which they bought the tickets.

"Every day before I come to work I stop here,” said Kesterson.

Mayes said he usually scratch off tickets, but switching it up one day made all the difference for him.

"I was really excited. I did a lot of jumping around and screaming and then it kind of hit me and I had to settle down and relax for a bit and take a breather."

Kesterson said she plays the lottery pretty regularly. She even won $10,000 before, but she said winning $1 million is a little different.

"A whole lot bigger and a whole lot more exciting, I guess, is what I would have to say," said Kesterson.

When these two winners bought their lottery tickets at the local stores, they weren't the only ones winning money. Each of the local stores got $10,000 for selling those winning tickets.

"I'm just extremely happy that the ticket was purchased here by one of our regular guests, I mean it's just really exciting for all of us," said Vonnie Comeau, the manager of the 7-11 which sold the winning ticket.

Both winners said they plan on saving the money for now.

"Just gonna pay off some debt and hopefully invest and try to better myself and my families," said Mayes.

Mayes won his $1 million on the New Year's lottery raffle at the 7-11 off North Valley Pike in Broadway. Kesterson won her money off a scratch ticket at the Kangaroo Express in Mint Spring, just south of Staunton.
