FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) -- Fredericksburg's deputy fire chief says a state police bomb technician safely removed a live World War Two-era grenade from a house in the city.

Mike Jones says family members were cleaning out the home Tuesday afternoon when they found the grenade in the bottom of a trunk that had other personal items related to military service during the war.

Firefighters responding to a 9-1-1 call met with the caller to gather further information, then requested help from the Virginia State Police Bomb Squad. The Free Lance-Star reports that the explosive was removed for proper disposal without incident.
