Judge to Rule Soon in Va. Confederate Flag Dispute

A ruling is expected soon on Lexington's bid to dismiss a lawsuit challenging its decision to keep the Confederate battle flag off of municipal light poles.

Media outlets report that U.S. District Judge Samuel Wilson held a hearing Monday on the city's request to dismiss the case. Wilson said he likely will rule in one to two weeks.

A city ordinance allows only the city, state and national flags to be flown from municipal flagpoles. The lawsuit by the Sons of Confederate Veterans argues that the ordinance violates its free speech.

Attorneys for the city told Wilson that the ordinance prohibits all nongovernment displays, and not just the Confederate flag.
