Smith advanced to Friday's semifinal round by finishing third in her heat Thursday night with a time of 57.01.
The top three finishers in each heat qualified Thursday night along with the four next fastest times.
Smith will run in one of two eight-runner heats tomorrow for a chance to race again in Sunday's final. Her race is 6:20 PM.
Smith's time ranked 15 out of the 16 runners to qualify for the semifinals.
Smith is currently a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin.
