Handley and James Wood have never really gotten along. But Saturday at Radford University, the age old rivals both made our area very proud by bringing home a pair of state tennis titles. By beating Jamestown 5-0, the Lady Judges earned their 2nd straight VHSL group AA championship. The win also marked Handley's 45th consecutive team triumph, a streak that every member of the Maroon and White could take pride in.
"Even the girls that didn't hit a ball at states, were there holding umbrellas" noted head coach Terry Ewell. "They were there getting water, making sure everybody was hydrated.. it was a total team effort."
In doubles action Kari Pope and Headley Wilson of James Wood defeated Northside’s Ashley Masterson and Rachel Fertitta 6-2, 6-1 Saturday to claim the school's first ever state title in tennis. Pope, a junior, and Wilson, a freshman, had never played together before this year... but found the chemistry necessary to make Blue and Gold history. "On the court it works because we know each other and trust each other" said Pope, who transferred to James Wood before the school year. "We don't have to be self conscious when playing doubles, we can just be ourselves."
