When Sam Harrell goes into cup stacking mode, there is basically no stopping her. This Aylor middle schooler is a cup stacking machine and when she completed a cycle in 8.94 seconds, back on March 8th it was an accomplishment for the record books.
"I thought it was awesome that I set a new state record. It's a pretty good feeling." said Harrell about her latest title.
Sam's skills have taken her to the world cup stacking championships and beyond. But stacking is about more than competition and records, it's a great way to get kids interested in both math, and physical education.
"Math skills, piano, these are the kinds of benefits cup stacking can do for you" noted Sam's coach and Bass-Hoover P.E. teacher Joe Burton. "You don't necessarily need to pick up a ball, you can pick up a set of twelve cups and stack away."
As the sport of cup stacking grows locally and nationally, more and more kids are sure to take up this fun past time. But if anybody out there is thinking about catching up to Sam, they better be willing to put in the practice.
"At practice you make yourself re-do it if you mess up, and if you fumble you have to re-do it. But when you're doing this you can restart and make it better" says Sam.
