For the second time in the past 15 years, the Joe Gibbs era has come to an end in Washington. This stint didn't end like the last one, a win in Super Bowl XXVI sent Gibbs into the sunset on the perfect note. Last weekend's loss to Seattle wasn't quite a storybook ending, but regardless...it was time to move on.
"My family situation being what it is I told the team I didn't think I could make the kind of commitment I need to make" said Gibbs during his farewell press conference.
Local resident Mark Moseley played for Gibbs from 1981 through 1986, and like most of Gibbs' players, the former Burgundy and Gold Kicker holds the Hall of Fame Coach in the highest regard possible.
"Those of us that played under him a long time ago... we still consider him our coach" says Moseley, "we still call him coach and he's like our best friend."
Gibbs has had a huge impact on the Redskins... some would argue he saved the team from meddlesome owner Daniel Snyder... and he finally brought some stability to a position which had had big names but little success since Gibbs' first departure... in the end though he'll be remembered as the face of one of the NFL's most popular teams...
"He is THE Coach of the Washington Redskins, he turned us into a winning organization" added Moseley. "The fans will always love coach Gibbs."
