A wild Friday night came and went, signaling new life for some local high schools and the end of the season for others. Five teams from our coverage area advanced to the 1st round of the Virginia High School League playoffs... here's how they fared.

Sherando 21 James Wood 14

In a game for the ages, the Warriors came back from a 14-0 second half deficit to beat James Wood in this Region II Division 4 Semifinal. Sherando's Ross Metheny hit Derek Crosen on a 42 yard touchdown pass with less than a minute to play to provide the final tally in the Black and Red's 7 point win. James Wood drove the ball down to the Sherando 1 yard line before Crosen again provided some heroics this time stopping Tyler Orndorff just shy of the goal line with no time left on the scoreboard. Sherando will play Park View in the next round.

Millbrook 27 Briar Woods 24

In a rematch from Week 1, the host Pioneers got revenge and a win in their first ever playoff appearance. Briar Woods beat Millbrook 40-14 to open the season, but this game proved to be a much different story. Millbrook quarterback Andrew Oates put the finishing touches on a back and forth second half when he hit Neil Quince to give the Pioneers a 27-24 lead in this Region II Division 3 Semifinal. Next up for Millbrook... @ Monticello.

Monticello 21 Handley 17

The home standing Mustangs needed a late touchdown to overcome an upset minded Handley side. J.J. Dorsey worked his usual magic for the visitors with a touchdown run and a touchdown pass in his final game in a Judges uniform. Running Back Takeem Hedgeman scored all 3 touchdowns for Monticello.

Goochland 34 Clarke County 28

The Eagles Cinderella season came to an end as Clarke County fell to the defending state champion Bulldogs. The Bull Run District champs were even with Goochland at the half (14-14) but couldn't overcome a second half blitz from the home side. Clarke County's Chandler Rhoads accounted for 200 yards of total offense in the loss.
