The United Mine Workers wants to weigh in on a lawsuit seeking to restore Blair Mountain to the National Register of Historic Places.

The Charleston Gazette reports the union has filed a motion seeking permission to file a friend of the court brief in a lawsuit over the mountain's status.

The Sierra Club and others pushing to protect the southern West Virginia landmark sued Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and officials with the National Park Service and National Register last September. The suit seeks to force the mountain onto the list.

Blair Mountain is the site of a 1921 battle between miners and police and federal troops over union organizing. It was added to the register last year, but removed after the number of objecting property owners was increased.
