Kern Toyota Scion is seeing high sales despite a recall nightmare. The dealer has sold more cars in the first 10 days of March than they did for the month of February. Owner Took Kern says a recent report that Toyota's sales are up 50 percent from this time last year is no surprise. "I think it's due to the loyalty of the customers. They've had four or five different Toyota's and had success with them. Right now Toyota is offering 0% on eight models for 60 months, which they've never had before."
Recent recalls for sticky gas pedals and faulty floor mats haven't plagued this dealership. "We haven't had any problems, our service area hasn't seen any problems with it. That's a good thing," says Kern.
Kern has been selling cars almost 40 years. Even though Toyota has recalled close to 6 million cars in the U.S. he thinks the situation is being blown out of proportion. "All the recalls in the U.S. last year, Toyota only had 11 percent. Sometimes when you see Toyota so much, you think they have many more. One of the reasons is because they sell a lot of cars. When you sell close to 2 million cars and year and have a recall, the numbers seem very large," Kern says.
Last year Toyota took over the top spot as the world's largest auto maker. It also saw the most sales under the "Cash for Clunkers* program with the highest share of vehicles sold.
