WATCH FOR SNOW AND ICE PATCHES IN SHENANDOAH VALLEY

STAUNTON – (9:40 p.m.) As temperatures approach the low teens and single digits tonight, motorists should travel with extreme caution. All wet surfaces are likely to be icy and black ice is possible in many areas. Many roads still have snow or slush on them.

Most secondary roads have received at least one pass with a plow. The secondary system is projected to be completed with initial plowing by noon on Monday in the Shenandoah Valley.

Virginia Department of Transportation crews and contractors will continue to work as needed throughout the night.

Here are the road conditions for tonight:

Interstate 64 – Clear in Alleghany, Rockbridge and Augusta counties.

Interstate 66 – Moderate conditions in Warren County.

Interstate 81 – Clear in Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Frederick and Shenandoah counties..

Primary roads – Moderate conditions in Warren and Clarke counties. Moderate to minor conditions Frederick County. Minor conditions in Augusta, Rockingham, and Page counties. Shenandoah County has clear conditions except for Route 55 west, which is in minor condition. Clear conditions in Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge and Highland counties.

Secondary roads are in severe condition in Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke counties. Moderate conditions are in Rockbridge, Bath, Augusta, Rockingham and Shenandoah counties. Minor conditions in Alleghany and Highland counties.

Motorists are reminded that ice and freezing rain conditions can still produce hazardous driving conditions, even when roads are treated. People who are driving in winter road conditions should use extra caution particularly on bridges, overpasses, curves, hills and ramps.

The VDOT Staunton District serves Frederick, Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren, Page, Rockingham, Augusta, Highland, Rockbridge, Alleghany and Bath counties.

Closed – Roadway is closed; impassable

Severe – Significant accumulations of snow or ice blocking the roadway; conditions are hazardous

Moderate – Snow or ice covering a major portion of the roadway; passable with caution

Minor – Advisory, potential for icy patches or snow on roadway; passable with caution
