Federal Law Impacts Local School District Meals

Throughout the summer, school districts have been preparing for a new year.

And with a new year, comes new regulations with school meals

These federal laws are affecting our local districts.

These laws are put in place to make sure school breakfast and lunch is healthy for students.

At the same time... It's hard to track what the student is choosing to buy or not to buy.

They have to make sure three of the five meal components are on a students plate.

Frederick County Public Schools says they've been busy getting their menus to the new standard.

"There's calories minimums and maximum, and they've now broken them down to three age appropriate categories for menu planning. There's K through five menu planning, six through eight menu planning, and nine through 12 menu planning," said FCPS Supervisor of School Nutrition, Jennifer White. "All of those have calorie minimums and maximum levels that we have to met so we're counting absolutely everything that we serve to students who go through the cafeteria line including condiments."

The five meal components are grain, dairy, meat, vegetable and fruit.

They can pick their three components, but the only mandatory component is a fruit or a vegetable.

Before they check out, they'll have a monitor make sure that they're buying everything that's required.
