UPDATE: Frederick County Sheriff's Deputies say 51-year-old Robert Ray Kennedy Jr. of Winchester died at the scene of a car crash Tuesday afternoon.

The accident happened around 1:40 p.m. Deputies say Kennedy was backing out of his driveway onto Senseny Road near the Clarke County line when he nearly struck a vehicle.

Witnesses tell officers that they saw the car travel into the center turn lane nearly striking two more vehicles that were heading towards Winchester. Then witnesses say, the vehicle took off at a high rate of speed. Officers say they were told the car then crossed both lanes of traffic and hit the guardrail on the other side of the road. The guardrail ended up pulling the door off the driver's side of the car.

Deputies say Kennedy was not ejected from the car. They also say he was not wearing a seat belt.

Officers are saying speed played a part in the crash. The crash is still under investigation.
