Increase in Eagle Population Along the Shenandoah River

Volunteers at Shenandoah River State Park say they're seeing a lot of birds.

While they're not sure where they're coming from, they say there's something about the Shenandoah River that attracts some of the Nation's most beautiful and prized animals.

That includes bald eagles.

Park volunteer Brian Bennett says he sees them often while he's on the river.

"They're coming back. Ten years ago you'd come down the river and you'd be really lucky to see one. I kayak every Monday with another guy and just about every Monday we see one now," said Bennett.

The bald eagle was removed from the endangered species list in 2007, but they are still protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.

The American Bald Eagle Foundation says they're the only type of eagle unique to North America.
