UPDATE: 10:55AM Police say Colorado movie theater suspect's apartment is booby-trapped and area evacuated.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Authorities say there are 12 dead and at least 38 injured after a mass shooting in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado near Denver around 12:30 central time Friday morning.
Police say the suspect, identified as 24-year-old James Holmes, is in custody.
Authorities say the armed man entered the crowded Century 16 movie theater with a rifle, handgun, shotgun, and bullet proof vest and released some sort of gas before opening fire. Police are suspecting it was tear gas.
Witnesses say there was some confusion because the shots were fired about 30 minutes into the screening of "Dark Knight Rises" during a fight scene. Many of the people thought the gunshots were part of the special effects.
Police have found explosives both in the theater and at the suspect's apartment. His apartment complex has been evacuated.
The man's car with a Tennessee license plate is being searched and police say they have found a "suspicious looking backpack."
There are more than 250 local authorities and 100 FBI agents on the scene.
