Virginia Strawberries Arriving Early in 2012

Posted: 2:08 AM Apr 6, 2012
Reporter: Associated Press

CUMBERLAND, Va. (AP) -- The unusually warm weather will mean the early arrival of strawberries this season.

The Virginia Farm Bureau says the arrival of strawberries will be one holiday earlier this year. While Mother's Day traditionally marks the berry's debut, this year they'll be arriving soon after Easter.

Rob French says the strawberries he grows on nine acres in Cumberland County will be 3 1/2 weeks early. He says that's a good thing, but he's still wary of frost.

Virginia Beach grower Mike Cullipher recalls a 2007 Easter freeze that hurt some Virginia fruit growers. He says he's keeping his fingers crossed.
