Clarke Schools Cut Ties with Performing Arts Program

Clarke County schools are cutting ties with an arts program that has cost them thousands of dollars without much return.

The Performing and Visual Arts Northwest Program cost the district nearly $20,000 each year.

The problem was only six or eight kids were taking part in the program.

Superintendent Mike Murphy says they'll try to use that money to create their own arts program.

“Unfortunately, times continue to be tough and our participation in PAVAN has been dropping over the years, diminishing,” says Murphy. “However, the fixed fee we pay is the same fee that all other school divisions pay, so our return on investment for PAVAN was getting harder and harder to justify over time.”

Murphy says he hopes that if they create a more local, in-house arts program, it'll help spike interest in arts programs like dance, band and theater.
