Selah Theatre Project will produce The Laramie Project, an award-winning drama about the aftermath of the murder of Matthew Shepard.
May 29, 2012 (Winchester) – A cast and creative team made up of local community members begun the process of producing a significant, compelling drama on stage about the aftermath of a well-known hate crime.
Under the guidance of director, La Tasha Do’zia-Earley of Selah Theatre Project, area residents are taking part to produce the drama The Laramie Project at The Shenandoah Arts Council. The show will take place at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, June 22-23 and June 29-30 as well as Sunday afternoons, June 24 and July 1 at 2:30pm.
“This project is a unique opportunity for our community to support our local Aids Response Effort in an creative and inspiring way”, said La Tasha, Selah Theatre Project’s founding artistic director. “The content of this production is heavy, yet eye-opening. We hope to bring awareness of HIV/AIDS education.”
After delicate selection, the ensemble cast consists of: Sarah Celec, Glenn Frail, Maurice Goodwin, Ben Kelley, Ryan Reynolds, Beth Whitney, Chris Whitney, and Kara Younce.
The Laramie Project is about the brutal murder of gay college student Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming, in 1998. As interviews with local citizens and officials unveil the hate crime and its aftermath, the play explores the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion in which we are capable.
Known as the “new” theatre company in town, Selah Theatre Project aligns productions with individual non-profit or charitable organizations for fund-raising. Through The Laramie Project, proceeds from ticket sales will go directly to The Aids Response Effort.
“This production offers a powerful demonstration of reality and the human condition,” she said. “The material is insightful, thought-provoking and forces you to face reality. I’m very pleased with our cast and cannot wait to present this production to our community.”
