A tree lined street can no longer be seen on the Old Town Winchester walking mall. But the wood from those trees isn't being wasted.
Wood artisans spent the morning picking out the material for future creations. They're with Apple Valley Woodturners. An organization that has about 100 members. They make everything from bowls to salt and pepper shakers out of wood.
"Some of it's commercial," said Woodturner Mike Fraser. "Some of it's found. Some of it's like this. We're preserving wood that was harvested off the Winchester mall. We tried to do the same thing when they took down the trees at Handley."
Woodturning is when you quickly spin a piece of wood while carving it with a chisel. Fraser says woodturners look for wood that has unusual patterns or markings in the grain.
