UPDATE 5:50 PM FRIDAY:

Still no word on what may have driven a heavily armed gunman to shoot up the inside of a crowded movie theater during a midnight showing of the new Batman movie in Aurora, Colo. The suspect, 24-year-old James Holmes, is said not to be talking to investigators. Twelve people were killed and nearly 60 others wounded in one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent U.S. history.

Police in the Denver suburb of Aurora say the man who killed 12 people at the midnight showing of the new Batman movie last night was carrying a semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun and two pistols -- and that he wore a gas mask, along with a ballistic helmet and vest. The suspect, who's in custody, is identified as 24-year-old James Holmes -- who, until recently, was studying neuroscience in a Ph.D. program at the University of Colorado at Denver. In addition to the 12 who died, more than 50 others were wounded.
