Skyline High School Marching Band

Updated: Wed 3:21 PM, Sep 14, 2011

For the marching band at Skyline High School, Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" is one of several modern melodies that the band is rocking this fall. With the soggy field, the band's director has kept rehearsals indoors.

Rick Yeakle, Director of Bands at Skyline said, "The weather has put us inside on all of our rehearsals. We can't get on the football field, because it's like a great big sponge," on Friday. That hasn't stopped the band from pushing forward with an energetic selection of songs that are sure to have you dancing in the stands.

He continued, "In the stands, we'll be playing a variety of different songs...Cee Lo's song, "Forget You'" and some other popular song that are out on the charts now."

Playing songs they already know and love pumps that much more energy into these young musicians. With a passion for playing, some carry multiple instruments on the field.

Olivia Montague, a sophomore at Skyline explained, "I play about seven instruments, so, I just pick them up, and I just read music until I know how to play them."

This is just one of 65 band members that contribute to the smooth sound at Skyline. With that many players, the director has selected two drum majors to lead their peers out on the field. Both of them have a passion for the music.
Presley Rutherford, a junior drum major said, "It's a good experience. It helps with structure and learning. It's just fun."

Kristen, who's a sophomore drum major added, "It's...all modern. I really like all the selections this year. They're better than last year and any the year before."

So, where do these song ideas come from?

"Our song ideas come from the students and myself. We create our shows. We don't buy any stock shows or canned shows so to speak," continued Yeakle.

Through this process, the kids get to learn and grow together, despite what the weather may bring.

Ishan Shah, who plays the bass drum elaborated, "It's fun, because we get to learn a lot of new stuff. Our band is pretty solid."

With rain or shine, this band is one of a kind and is ready to take the field in all weather conditions.
