They competed to benefit the homeless and hungry right here in our area.

The Governor's Bowl kicked off on Memorial Day and ended on Independence Day.

Chambers of Commerce all across Virginia were invited by Governor McDonnell to compete against each other in collecting the most food and funds for food banks.

And our local Chambers were proud to participate.

"There are more homeless people within the last few years due to the economy," said Jody Wall.

Wall is the Director of Programs and Events for the Top of Virgina Regiona Chamber.

"And in the summertime, they seem to have fewer resources, they seem to be more on their own and that's when the food pantries are really in most need," said Wall.

Wall also mentioned that the food collected from the drive will be donated to food banks right here in our area.

The winning Chamber will be announced at the end of the month.
