GALAX, Va. (AP) -- Police say a Grayson County deputy shot while responding to a domestic dispute is expected to make a full recovery.

WDBJ-TV reports that Deputy Douglas Waller was shot in the lower abdomen late Tuesday night as he approached the front door of a residence in Galax. The bullet hit Waller's bulletproof vest and went to his pelvis region.

Waller and Deputy Kevin Watson took cover behind a vehicle in the driveway and Watson returned fire.

Two people came out of the house after a couple of minutes and surrendered.

Police charged 44-year-old Gary Frank Wheatley of Galax with two counts of attempted capital murder, and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. Forty-seven-year-old Crystal Gooslin of Galax was charged with possession of ammunition by a convicted felon.
