Frederick County Fire Chief Tim Welsh has been placed on administrative leave until an internal investigation can be completed.

Sheriff's deputies arrested Welsh early Monday morning for driving while intoxicated. Authorities say, Welsh was driving his personal car when he was caught speeding down Northwestern Pike.

Before pulling him over, the deputy says he noticed Welsh crossing the center line. Welsh failed the sobriety test, was arrested and taken to Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center. He was released soon after.

Welsh's court date is set for December 17th. Dennis Linaburg, the deputy chief and fire marshal tells TV3 that he will be the acting chief until further notice.

This just hurts the reputaion of public safety in the area that much more. We are already dealing with delayed response times and non standardized trianing. Trying to develope a professional fire and rescue service like that have in Fairfax or Arlington is hard enough, without dealing with the good ol boy attitudes this individual is displaying. He should not have been picked to replace Gary Debuler as Chief for Frederick County. The county would have been better going with someone the caliber of Chief Scott Cullers who is now Chief of Winchester
