Posted: Fri 11:08 AM, Sep 14, 2012

From the Martinsburg Police Department:

On Friday, September 14, 2012, at approximately midnight, the Martinsburg Police Department and Martinsburg Fire Department responded to 316 Oak Street in Martinsburg WV in reference to a structure fire. Upon arrival at the location, officers found the residence to be engulfed with fire. Small explosions that sounded like gunshots were heard coming from within the residence, which was later determined to be from ammunition exploding in the residence as a result of the fire.

Fire fighters from the Martinsburg Fire Department quickly extinguished the fire to the residence and while doing so, located a decedent in the residence. Based upon speaking with witnesses, it is believed that the decedent is the occupant of the residence, although positive identification will be made at autopsy.

After the fire was extinguished, Captain Greg Hoover of the Martinsburg Fire Department conducted an investigation into the origin of the fire, which is currently still pending.
