Transportation leaders have plans to extend Route 37 in Frederick County.
VDOT and Frederick County have created a draft to extend Route 37 from exit 310 to exit 317 along the other side of I-81, so that the bypass loops around Winchester.
The County says, this project will have a huge impact on drivers, and hopes to limit congestion in the area during rush hours.
"We always use 37," said Ersil Hott. He remembers the days when Route 37 didn't exist at all.
He used this road for years to get back and forth to work and says, even more change will help.
Route 37 was created in the 1960's. Fifty years later, Frederick County leaders see the need for the expansion.
"We've undergone some pretty significant booms as far as development, particularly in the eastern portion of the county, that's where a lot of our residential development is taking place," said John Bishop of Frederick County's transportation department. "A lot of commercial, some industrial, plus a lot of interest for more of these types of things."
The proposed Route 37 expansion includes many ramp interchanges and even going through some neighborhoods.
"It's important to know that right now we are in the comment stage," said John. "This is VDOT's first blush at refining these things, they are seeking comment from the county. We have some things that we are going to have some issues with and some things we're not."
The last estimate for this project a few years ago was more than $300,000.
John says the work for this expansion will be taken one step at a time.
"This is not a project we expect to get funded in the next couple of years," he said. "These are things that you prioritize key segments and build them piece-by-piece as you can."
The county is setting up a comment section on its website for your feedback.
