The 23 proposals focus on improving background checks, banning assault weapons with high capacity clips, providing school officials with more training in dangerous situations and giving more access to people who need mental health services.
"Nobody is trying to take away your guns," said Ellen Nichols.
Ellen is a grandmother. How she feels about the president's gun control efforts is like a lot of people we ran into.

"Although I do think that gun control is really important it is something that we should be spending a lot of time and energy on figuring out, knowing why these shooters are doing what they're doing I think is maybe even more important than controlling where these guns are going," said Zella Deforest.
Zella wants to be a teacher. While she supports Obama's plan to get educators trained in handling a gunman in school, she says guns in the classroom are not the answer.
"I don't even know how to use one," she says. "I wouldn't feel safe having one in my classroom."
"Hopefully there won't be a next time," said Ellen. "But, should another incident arise, hopefully this kind of training will help."
Not everyone agrees ... TV3's Facebook page is full of comments against the president's plan.
Matt Spinks says "None of these measures will stop mentally unstable people from getting and using guns. Just another step towards disarming Americans."
Jason Hepner says "A gun ban is silly. Background checks are a fine idea, although they will not stop all gun crimes. Smaller magazines? It doesn't matter if you have a 30-round magazine, OR three 10-round magazines, you can (with a little practice) go through those rounds in under a minute."
Back in downtown Winchester .... Zella says, she thinks more focus should be on the shooter.
"If we understood where they were coming from and spent more time trying to figure out how we can prevent those types of issues then the gun control thing becomes less of an issue."
Virginia's newest senator Tim Kaine who says, he's happy about the steps the president took and he wants to see the senate move forward with more.
