Book Sale Raises Thousands for Libraries

The Friends of Handley Regional Library spends most of the year collecting books for their annual fall and spring used book sales.

While it's a fundraiser, it's also a way to give back to the community.

"I love books... I'm crazy about books," said volunteer Franklin Wright.

Wright volunteers regularly with Friends of Handley Regional Library and this book sale is something he can't wait for.

"In fact I keep my eyes out as I go around to see what might be available," said Wright.

"Hardbacks are $2. Large paperbacks are $1 and children's books are 50 cents. This is a great way to get good books in good condition," said executive director of Friends of Handley Regional Library, Barbara Dickinson.

It's a sale too good to pass up and for many it's a time to get books for themselves and their family.

"When people come in and they spend $15 and they walk out with 10 books... that's the price of maybe one book elsewhere," said chairman of the book sale, George Schember.

"It's a lot of fun to see the community support in helping to put the sale together and it's a little addictive to see people come in and find a treasure, a book they've been looking for," said Dickinson.

The sale happens twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring. Each raising more than $20,000 for the library.

"They're all new books every six months. Once these books are finished with this sale, they're taken out and we start all over again," said Schember.

Many books this spring were published in the past year.

"I bring books and I take home books. I try to keep an even keel there. I take home no more than I bring," said Wright.

"Bring in books in good condition and you'll have room on your shelves. So then come back during the sale and buy more books," said Dickinson.

If you have a few books you're looking to get rid of, you can drop off donations to the library during regular business hours. Click here to view their weekly hours.
