Paul Barnes has been released as SU head football coach, the school announced Monday.
The team held an end-of-season meeting at 3 p.m. Monday, where Barnes himself told the team he had been fired.
Barnes, the Hornets head coach for the past 11 seasons, departs the program with a 41-70 record.
The team lost its final nine games this season to finish with a 1-9 record.
Defensive Coordinator Brock McCullough will take over on an interim basis.
A national search for a new head coach will begin Tuesday.
SU Athletic Director Doug Zipp says he hopes to have the new coach on campus and coaching by January 1st.
