Women across the area turned out to celebrate success in the classroom and raise money for Lord Fairfax Community College.

The College held the first ever Women's Luncheon Wednesday afternoon at the Shenandoah Valley Golf Club.

The funds raised will go to the New Beginning Scholarship fund. The money is for single parents who demonstrate a financial need and possess a grade point average of 2.5 or above.

President John Sygielski says the scholarship serves an important purpose, especially for single moms.

"Sixty-five percent of our student body is female and we know nationally that more and more women are attending college than men. And so what we want to do is make sure that within our service region, we are able to invite all women who are interested in receiving a higher education to come to Lord Fairfax Community College," he said.

This is the first year for the scholarship and school officials say they plan to award the money annually.
