Virginia's General Assembly is the first in the nation to approve legislation that bucks federal health care reforms by banning mandatory health insurance coverage.

Without debate, the House of Delegates voted 80-17 Wednesday to accept Senate amendments to a bill that supporters say preserves Virginia's prerogatives as a state.

Thirty-four other legislatures have filed or proposed similar measures rejecting health insurance mandates.

But Virginia's legislature, scheduled to adjourn Saturday, is the first to finish work on a bill. The measure goes to Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell, who plans to sign it.

The measures are advancing nationally as Republicans capitalize on voter discontent over Democratic-backed federal health care reform efforts in Congress.

Supremacy Clause and the Commerce Clause Read THE Constitution; now we are only 9 votes away from the public option, now that is an Amen! No different than the state mandating you have auto insurance, except the United States Constitution trumps Virginia's constitution, if it did not we would still have segregation, etc. Get over it, 67 MILLION of us won in 2008 and that constitutes (no pun intended) a MAJORITY so until that changes, you are the MINORITY!

Amen, thank you VA for standing up. I don't have health care and I don't need the government telling me what I have to have. A government big enough to give you everything you want, is big enough to take away everything you have. Thomas Jefferson

The health reform bill does nothing to reduce the cost of insurance. If you believe it does you are a cool aid drinking pinhead. The federal government cannot mandate that anyone buy health insurance as it is against the constitution. The federal government has only limited power over states and the people of America and all Americans need to fight the leftist that are trying to ram the present bill down the throats of free Americans. States have the say in all matters that the constitution does not specifically grant the federal government. I hope the feds try and collect fines from free Americans as I sure would like to kill some stinking commies.
