A massive fire sparked at Carter Family Store on Route 11 in Middletown.

Around 8:42 Sunday night a Frederick County Sheriff's Deputy saw smoke coming from the building.

That's when he called dispatch.

When crews arrived fire could be seen shooting through the roof of the building.

The blaze forced deputies to shutdown Route 11 in both directions for several hours.

Middletown Mayor Mark Brown was at the scene of the fire.

"It's really unfortunate to see a business in Middletown go. Its part of our tax base, so that's the monetary side. The other side is its a business, its somebody's income, it's their living and I'm really sorry to see it go," says Middletown Mayor Mark Brown.

"We were coming up 81 and we seen the smoke and I heard on the scanner and we just stopped by to see what was going on," says Motorist Judy Peer.

Fire crews from at least four companies including Middletown, Stephens City, Warren County, and Shenandoah County responded to the scene.

No word on the cause of the blaze.

Luckily this community has VOLUNTEER firefighters as well as paid firefighters! Many in the community rely on these volunteers when they need help in a car accident, a sickness and a fire but few realize that MOST ARE VOLUNTEERS.... I am very sad that the Carter Store burnt as well as it is a local business, luckily no one was hurt! Luckily the gas pumps were not involved! Thank you to the volunteer and of course the paid members that come to the aid of ALL THE PEOPLE IN THIS COMMUNITY.. next time remember that they are giving of their own time and money to come to your aid when you need help. The communities you live in (unless a large city) would not be able to help you if it wasnt for volunteers! Remember to support your local fire company with donations, thank yous and be happy that they are there when you need them. And remember that they are always looking for dedicated volunteers to continue to help those in need!
