Governor Manchin spoke to town officials at the Jefferson County Emergency Communications Center today informing them that 400 National Guards have been deployed to go and assess the needs of citizens in rural areas.

Manchin adds that it is all about the citizens now. He urges residents in the eastern panhandle to get their supplies now before the next storm hits.

The governor told town officials to keep track of the money they are spending on the winter storms and he will do everything he can to help localities.

"We have a declaration and we will go to the Federal Government and ask for assistance," says Manchin. He adds, "This is not a normal, every-year snowfall. Under normal conditions we are prepared for it. This year we are not. So we have an extrordinary cost and that just wreaks havoc on people's budgets and budgets are tough now."

Manchin adds that residents should try to get some snow off their roofs if possible, because the weight could cause a collapse.

"Have provisions in case you are going to be stuck in your home for a day or two. If you have medical needs, get the needed care now," urges Manchin. "If you can't and all of this is not feasible for you, because of the rural-ness, location, or the roads being impassable, call 9-1-1 and we will send someone, either the National Guard or someone will get to you," adds Manchin.

Jefferson High School will be open as a shelter Tuesday with American Red Cross workers helping displaced residents.

"So we're going to do everything we can to see if the Federal Government can assist and help everyone in our communities. And where they can't help them, we as a state are going to help them the best that we possibly can. And we're going to share with everybody and it's just something that needs to be done," explains Manchin.
