More than 5,000 Allegheny Power customers in Virginia were still without power Monday night. Many of those residents are in the Valley.
Clarke County Resident David Weiss lost power midnight Friday. "Our biggest problem is getting water to the animals," says Weiss.
Weiss' sister takes care of sheep who are lambing. She had to carry water up from a stream to them. "Most of our herds have streams that they can get to, or ponds, but we do have two herds that are on waterers and so they've simply been without water," says Weiss.
Weiss says Monday is the critical day and if power isn't restored he will have to move his cattle to a different farm. The weekend storm has him considering buying a generator for his well pumps. "There might be a new plug hanging out of that box before too long," says Weiss.
David Wiedemer and his family live around the corner from Weiss and own a bed and breakfast. They lost power at their house which is on a Virginia power line, but not at the main house on the property, on a West Virginia power line. They decided on Saturday to walk to the main house. "We found it was very difficult, says Resident Wiedemer. "We had to go back and we had to call for the tractor so the tractor eventually came and took us in," says Resident Betsy Pritchard.
Most of the residents on Wickliffe Road in Clarke County aren't looking forward to more snow. "It's concerning because I don't have four wheel drive tractors and so my tractors are pretty much at the limit at the height of snow right now," says Weiss. "Hopefully it will come back on before the next snow comes," says Pritchard.
Crews restored power to Wickliffe Road in Clarke County around 2 o'clock Monday. They say a tree fell on the line causing the outage. Weiss says this is the longest he's gone without power on the farm.
