There was a lot of history taking place on Thursday night, in particular, this stage Patsy Cline performed on it herself, now it's getting dedicated towards her and not just for Handley High School but for the city of Winchester's Education Foundation an event truly to benefit it.
After tickets sold out almost immediately, the long-awaited Patsy Cline dedication featuring country legend Willie Nelson filled the Handley theater, now, the Patsy Cline Theater.
Handley alumni filled the seats as the school's Hill Top Singers got to open for Willie Nelson
JHHS Principal Doug Joyner was excited to see such a big turnout.
"It's fantastic. It's just one more example of the community, the whole region, the importance of our school to the community as a civic center. We are just thrilled to have Willie here and are thrilled to dedicating the theater," says Joyner.
Monetary proceeds from the dedication and concert go to the Winchester Education Foundation.
The program is in its 8th year and supplements school activities, scholarships, and items not covered by budgets.
Dr. Damon DeArment is the Winchester Education Foundation President. He hopes the event draws attention towards the foundation.
"I just think it's a great thing for the community to come together, not only to celebrate the Patsy Cline, which is long overdue for the area but also to raise awareness of the education foundation is active and we're doing things to help the future education of our students in Winchester," explains Dr. DeArment.
DeArment hopes to get credibility and recognition of the education foundation. He says the Winchester Education Foundation hired Senator Russ Potts as executive director and it has helped with fund-raising and events in the future.
He adds that since then, $250,000 has been raised for the foundation.
