The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Kernstown is becoming a reality.

Job Site Superintendent Grant Haught says since the walls went up in May, the project has advanced steadily.

"Most of the exterior work is done other than some patching of the tilt panels,"explains Haught. "We are waiting for text coat to come to put a final coat of paint on the building, and we are working on the curtain wall or the glass door front at the main entrance," adds Haught.

Haught says the projected opening date is early October, even though crews were sidelined one week by rainy weather.

"We have actually picked up all the days we have lost with the rain and were back real close to being on schedule," says Haught.

The steel construction, framing the theaters, kitchen, and restrooms, is finished and the drywall is being installed.

The building is being constructed to handle as many as 900 people, including up to 190 movie go-ers in the largest theater.

When you come in, this will be the lobby, there is a dining area, there will be some tables to sit at and have a few drinks," narrates Haught.

In the next few weeks, crews are going to be installing Styrofoam that will form the steps, and then that will be covered with a concrete topping.

"Your tables will sit in front of the step, then your chair will sit behind it, and there will be a travel way for the wait staff to service the people behind you," adds Haught.

The cinema will create hundreds of job opportunities including bartenders, servers, kitchen staff and more.

Owner Steve Nerangis says the time has been flying by and it is exciting to see it happen so quickly.

"It's amazing, it feels so great to be so close to the opening, and see everything come to fruition....things that you have seen on paper for a long time, now to see them standing here...it's really exciting," says Nerangis.

Theaters in the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema will also be available to rent for private parties, conferences, or presentations.

According to the cinema's web-site, they are now hiring for the jobs.

The drafthouse can't come soon enough. The other Winchester-area theaters are disgusting. I hope this forces them to either clean up or get out. Cheers to getting something cool in Winchester!
