The 3rd Battalion, 116th infantry, Virginia National Guard has a new home. Their new home is near they WInchester Airport. They were formerly housed on the campus of Shenandoah University.
"The old building was built in 1940, and it's really served its purpose," Captain David Garner said. "It just gives us the capabilities to do so many things that we didn't have the capabilities of doing over there. We have classrooms here, we have distance learning centers, trainers, call for fire trainers, a lot of training that we would have to go somewhere else to do."
One new perk in the facility is a virtual training room. There, they can work on target practice, simulating a daylight scenario or shooting in the dark without ever having to fire a single bullet. Garner is excited to call the new armory home.
"We've been in that other armory, it's very cramped it's hard to get around, there's limited office space," Garner said. "So, yes, it's a long time coming and I'm glad it's finally here."
The new armory has air conditioning in the dinning hall. Charles Lillis, who was at the opening of the old armory in 1940, says it's a familiar place that he's going to miss.
"Everything's changed since that time," Lillis said. "I first enlisted in 1934, so I was here a long time."
Lillis worked at the former armory, and says he's happy to see the new facility take the group into the 21st century, where the sky is the limit.
