Fireworks displays are a staple of many Fourth of July celebrations, but tough economic times are sending some fireworks up in smoke.

The recession forced some cities to fore-go fireworks shows as tax revenue and sponsorships have dried up. Communities that didn't cancel festivals are scaling back displays.

Local residents say they're glad the city is hosting events despite the recession. "To come together like this and still have everything going on with the kids...it's all about the kids. It's great," says J.C. Reedy. "We're very happy. It's Shawn's birthday tomorrow on the Fourth of July. He would not be happy if he didn't have fireworks to go to," says Jeanne Flowers.

A fireworks show is being held at Jim Barnett Park Friday night. Corporate and community sponsors helped finance the $10,000 display.
