Investigators aren't releasing the name of the 14-year old boy who drowned Thursday evening in the lake along side Sherando Park.

Now, people who didn't even know him are crying over a life lost too soon.

Yolanda Cogswell and her family watched in horror as rescue crews searched the lake at Sherando Park feverishly for a missing boy. She says she watched the young teen go under water and never come back up.

"The kids, they were playing on the side of the lake and two kids jumped in and one went back because he said it was too cold, and the other one just kept swimming, and he was almost on the other side when he just -- he just went in," Cogswell said.

Divers pulled the boy's body from the water shortly before 7 pm. They reportedly found his body just feet away from the shoreline.

Major Robert Eckman of the Frederick County Sheriff's Office calls it a tragedy.

"I think its a tragic event for the families, and the community," Eckman said. "And, I'm hoping in the days ahead that the community reaches out to the family."

Eckman says Frederick County Schools have been notified, and they'll have greif councelors on staff for friends of the boy.

Officials say the teen was getting ready to go to Sherando High School in the fall.

A friend of the greiving family says the victim was an only child, and was his mother's life.

As for Cogswell, what she saw Thursday evening, she'll never forget.

The friend of the family says the victim was a really nice person.

His body was taken to the medical examiner's office, awaiting an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
