Local workers hit the streets of Strasburg Wednesday to protest layoffs. Members of the United Auto Workers Local 2999 in Strasburg are speaking out against American jobs being outsourced to foreign countries.
Dennis Tharpe has been working at International Automotive Components in Strasburg for 14 years.
Recently, IAC announced that one of its major programs is moving from the Strasburg plant to one in Mexico. It's all a ripple effect of the General Motors Bankruptcy filing. That means more than 100 local workers will be without jobs.
Tharpe hopes the cuts stop there. "It's very stressful especially in a down economy, you don't know where to go to look for work and where you do go, no one is hiring," says Tharpe.
Tharpe and other United Auto Workers are protesting American jobs being sent out of the country. Hal Thompson a 20 year veteran of IAC says its time the government bails out the American people. "They have to think of us, rather than the big corporations from time to time, we are the people," says Thompson.
The workers say that when a job is lost, it doesn't just affect the person who is unemployed, it affects the entire community. "I just think it's important for everybody in the community to know that for every job lost, it not only affects the family involved, but it affects my ability to pay my taxes, it affects everybody in the community right down to the waitress in the diner," says UAW Local 2999 President Karen Foster.
For these valley residents, it's the uncertainty that makes it so hard because they say it doesn't matter how much time you've put in, anyone could be the next to go. "You think you're pushing 15 or 20 years at a facility, you would think that you're pretty safe, but not in this economy, not any more," says Tharpe.
The protest lasted about three hours. Many of the workers joined the group as they finished their shifts.
